Amish Homemade Bread Recipe
2 cups Milk
1 tbsp Butter
1 pkg Dry yeast (1/4oz)
¼ cup Warm water
5-1/2 to 6-1/2 cups Flour
2 tbsp Sugar
2 tsp Salt
In small saucepan, scald milk, stir in butter and melt. Cool until
lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl; then
add milk mixture, 3 cups of the flour, sugar and salt in with the yeast
and water. Beat on medium speed, scraping the bowl often, until
smooth. Fold in more flour until the dough is easy to handle. Place
dough onto lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic
(10 minutes). Place homemade bread dough into a greased bowl,
then turn the dough greased side up and cover until the dough
doubles in size (may take 1-1/2 hours). Punch down dough and
divide in two; shaping each half into a loaf. Place each loaf into its
own greased 9x5” bread pan and cover. Allow each loaf to rise until
doubled in size (1 hour) and bake uncovered at 400 degrees until
golden brown (25-35 minutes). When baked, remove from pans
immediately and let cool. Loaves may be brushed with butter while
still warm, if desired.
